#goals

As we wrap up the first month of the new year, I thought I’d share some thoughts about some personal goals I’ve made for myself in 2018.

The new year always brings a lot of reflection and soul searching. I’m not huge into resolutions, but I did spend some time thinking about some things I’d like to change and accomplish in 2018:

  1. Unplug. I started doing this by putting my phone away when I nurse my daughter. This may not sound like a big deal, but it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. She eats every two hours for 20-30 mins at a time. Putting my phone down during this time allows me to enjoy every second of that time with her, instead of mindlessly scrolling through social media.
  2. Be warm. I don’t mean raising my body temperature. I started thinking about people who I love to be around and what it is about them that makes me want to be around them. I realized, they’re warm. Whether it’s their smile, the way they greet me, the way they hug, or their body language when we’re talking, there’s something about their character that’s warm and inviting. I think I have a tendency to come off as cold sometimes when I don’t really mean to. I want to be more aware of this so that I can make others feel warm when they’re around me.
  3. Read more. It’s pretty simple. Exercise my library card more!
  4. Journal. I’ve journaled on and off since I could write sentences. Every time I find an old journal entry, I think of how glad I am that I put that moment in time down in words, whether it was when I was 7 or 17. I journaled every week throughout my pregnancy with Emery and I recently read through it all. Reliving those nine months when I carried her in my belly brought up so many emotions! So, I dusted off an old notebook I used to jot down thoughts in college and started writing again. I mostly write lists: to-do lists, lists of things to read, movies to watch, or people to get a hold of. I also write down a “word of the week” at the end of each week. Just one word to sum up how my week went. It’s a quick, but good way to reflect on how I spent my time that week.
  5. Create. You’ll find this word on my “resolutions” list every year. I always want to continue to exercise and grow my creative abilities. I recently got a job teaching a photography class at our local arts academy. I’m also continuing my small business, Printed With Grace. I think this year I’d also like to find time to pick up painting again (:
